Why Theory Lessons - introduction:

The study of Music Theory helps you understand the co-relation between the notes, in simple terms it explains what is going on within the song that you play.

The knowledge of Music Theory is essential in creating songs, arrangements or improvising - skills so very desired and so closely related to the knowledge of music theory. How could one fill-in and turned the popular melody (line) into a good sounding song (arrangement:? Or how could one improvise over a bass line if one has no idea which notes and chords will sound good?

Such knowledge of "what is going on" within the piece of music that you play contributes to the understanding of the song's structure, chord progression and consequently leads to much easier memorization, fluidity of performance while helping you creating your own music, too!

While many self-thought song-makers came up with interesting melodies and ideas, those melodies became known, recorded/performed songs only AFTER someone with professional musical training (producer, arranger) - "organized" and structured such gifted musical thoughts. Or - with solid knowledge of music theory - you can do it all!

Sign up for Music Theory lessons: At Clarkson Piano Studio, we have a very different view of what is Music Theory: Everything to do with music up until a note is sounded! By changing our attitude about what it means to study Theory – ironically, very little of which is theoretical, but rather, quite practical! – we can engage students like never before. From learning why scales, intervals, chords matter, what we can build and create using them to working with real-world practical examples, our Music Theory program can enhance the practical instrument work while enabling new heights of musical achievement through true understanding and musical literacy.

Piano study greatly compliments the study of music theory. Or vice versa - piano simply is the best "first instrument" or the only instrument that allows you to visually see intervals and the structure of the chords that you are playing.

Certain concepts such as inversion become much clearer when you have them laid out visually in front of you, and unlike most other instruments, piano provides the full range of all orchestral instruments of Western Music.

At Clarkson Piano Studio we believe that Music Theory is one of the most underrated parts of majority of music student’s education. Typically viewed as “mandatory” and ”a requirement” for intermediate and advanced students (which also allows high school-aged students to achieve a credit towards their Ontario Secondary School Diploma), the fact is that Music Theory is so much more than just “how to write notes and scales.”
